FAQ - Common Answers to Common Questions

Are Icicle Pansies perennials?

They are a 2-season annual. In late spring, they should be replaced with summer annuals. In the heat, pansies get leggy with fewer blooms. Encourage your customers to plant them every fall for best results.
Are Icicle Violas just as hardy?
Yes. The blooms are smaller but usually more plentiful on a single plant and some gardeners prefer their delicate blooms.

What special care do Icicle Pansies need?
Fertilize them when you plant them in the fall, and water them so they don't dry out. Leave them as-is for winter - no mulch needed. Fertilize again in early spring. Deadhead them only if you like to!

How much sun do they need?
Full or part sun is good, 6 to 12 hours per day. They don't like it too shady.

How far north will they survive?
They are guaranteed to survive the winters in markets where they are sold -- up to Thunder Bay, Ontario, or Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Can they be planted in containers?
They are not guaranteed to survive the winter in containers. But you can enjoy them in containers in the fall, then remove them from the container and replant in the ground prior to winter to get blooms again in spring.

3 Important Notes:

  • Don't plant them where they can be exposed to road salt. If your road or driveway gets salted, and it gets onto your Icicle Pansy garden, it can kill the plants.

  • Make sure the garden is well-drained. If water puddles around the plants and the water freezes, this can kill the plants.

  • Don't plant them where there is high wind exposure. High winds can expose plants and dry them out quickly when they freeze. This can kill them. Gardens with more protection from wind will do best- blooming longer and more vigorously.
